Revealed: The best and worst places in West Midlands for food hygiene ratings & it’s bad news for Birmingham
The towns and cities across the West Midlands that score highest and lowest for their food hygiene ratings have been revealed.
This is thanks to a report from online training provider High Speed Training, marking 15 years since the introduction of the Food Hygiene Rating Scheme.
The report, which analysed Food Standards Agency (FSA) data for over 240,000 food businesses across England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales, found that in the West Midlands, the average food hygiene rating across all food establishments was 4.45 from 18,082 premises, which places the region 8th out of 9 in the national rankings, just ahead of London.
Best and worst scores in the West Midlands
The top spot in the West Midlands went to Sutton Coldfield, with an impressive average score of 4.61, placing them joint 10th in the national rankings for towns and cities.
The biggest improver in the region was Nuneaton, who increased its rating by an impressive 0.15 from 2024 and climbed 5 places in the rankings to 7th overall.
The lowest average rating in the West Midlands went to Birmingham, with an average score of 4.11, meaning the city ranks second bottom in the national rankings for towns and cities. Its score did improve by 0.03 from 2024 however., and had by far the highest number of premises, with 3,459 compared to Coventry’s 850.
High Speed Training’s report also found that 24.3% of takeaways across the West Midlands scored 3 or below for their food hygiene rating. In Birmingham, this rose to 37%.
What else do the figures show?
- Ranked 10th in the region, Wolverhampton had the biggest drop in ranking, moving down 5 positions from its 2024 rank of 5th.
- Ranked 15th in the West Midlands, West Bromwich had the biggest decrease in average rating with a drop of 0.26. Its average rating in 2024 was 4.42.
- Across the region, there were 18,082 premises analysed. This is an increase of 358 from 2024.
