Students take Over Walsall Market to Showcase Entrepreneurial Spirit

Walsall Market was transformed into a vibrant hub of creativity and enterprise on Wednesday 29 April, as students from across Walsall and Birmingham took over the stalls for a special schools enterprise project delivered in partnership with the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA).

Running from 9.30am to 2.00pm, the event saw students from eight schools and colleges step into the world of business, managing their own stalls and selling a variety of products to members of the public. In total, 12 stalls were operated with over 40 students taking part, creating a lively and engaging market atmosphere that drew in visitors keen to support young talent.

The initiative aimed to encourage entrepreneurship by giving students hands-on experience of running a business from developing products and setting prices to promoting their stalls and interacting with customers. Throughout the day, students demonstrated confidence, creativity and strong teamwork skills as they brought their ideas to life.

Participating schools and groups included Elmwood School, East Birmingham Network, Wilson Stuart School, Walsall Studio School, Shepwell School, New Leaf Centre and Walsall College. Several schools managed multiple stalls, allowing for greater collaboration and a broader showcase of products.

 

Simon Murcott from Elmwood school said:

“This project has had a real impact on our students. It’s encouraged teamwork, creativity and problem-solving, while also giving them a sense of independence and achievement. For many, it’s their first experience of entrepreneurship, and it’s been inspiring to see them grow in confidence and realise what they’re capable of.”

Lauren Lenehan, Team Leader in Supported Learning from Walsall College said: “Taking part in the market has been an incredible experience for our students. It’s given them the opportunity to apply what they’ve learned in the classroom to a real-life setting, helping to build their confidence, communication skills and understanding of how a business operates. Seeing them engage with customers and take pride in their work has been fantastic.”

The project, supported by WMCA, formed part of a wider effort to equip young people with essential skills for the future, helping to build confidence and inspire ambition. By taking learning beyond the classroom and into a real trading environment, students gained valuable insight into practical entrepreneurship.

Visitors were impressed by the professionalism and enthusiasm shown by the young stallholders. The day was widely considered a success, highlighting the potential of Walsall’s young people and the importance of initiatives that support skills development and enterprise.
