Special events to mark Long Lane Library’s 90th birthday
Long Lane Library in Dudley will celebrate its 90th birthday this Thursday (30 April).
The historic milestone is being marked with a series of special events taking place before, after and on the day itself.
The Dudley Bug will be the topic for discussion on Tuesday 28 April from 1.30 to 3.30pm and the 90th anniversary itself on Thursday 30 April will be marked with a Gospel Brass performance from 10am-11am, an illustrated talk about The Peaky Blinders by Professor Carl Chinn MBE from 11am-midday and insights into Leasowes Walled Garden with Carole Freer from 2-3pm.
Finally, on Saturday 9 May, there will be a celebratory birthday Quiznic from 4-6pm.
“All the events are free, but booking is required for some of them,” said Cara Evans, service development librarian.
Operating under the Better brand, GLL is the not-for-profit social enterprise that runs Long Lane Library on behalf of the council.
“Long Lane branch was opened by the Halesowen Urban District Council in 1936,” said Stephanie, Rhoden GLL partnership manager for Dudley Libraries. “The aim was to improve local access to literature and, 90 years later, we’re proud to be delivering on that legacy – not just by lending books but by broadening minds in all sorts of different ways.
“As ever, we are very grateful to the friends and volunteers who support our activities. Long Lane has been an important community asset for nearly a century and we look forward to celebrating its longevity with the people who’ve made it possible.”
