An iconic department store in Birmingham city centre is set to close in June.
Employees at House of Fraser – formerly Rackhams – were understood to have been informed yesterday that the branch – one of only a few left in the country – would close in late June.
It remains unclear how the closure will affect jobs.
House of Fraser took over the site from Rackhams – a Birmingham-founded department store that stood in the city for more than a century – in August 2003.
When House of Fraser fell into administration in 2018, the company was saved by Sports Direct tycoon Mike Ashley.
In 2023, the business confirmed plans to rebrand some stores under the ‘Frasers’ name.
The company has closed a number of branches nationwide in the early part of 2026.
