Wolverhampton named one of the UK’s cheapest places for pie

In line with National Pie Week which begins on 2nd March, Buzz Bingo conducted some new research to find out how your postcode might be affecting the price of your pies.

The data looked at the 50 most populated areas in the UK, and used TripAdvisor to find out the prices of a standard steak and ale pie. The results concluded that Wolverhampton is one of the cheapest places to eat out at a restaurant in the UK, with the average steak and ale pie costing only £12.06.

The average price was calculated by looking at the top 10 results for each area, filtering for 3-star and above restaurants only. The cheapest places in the UK are:

The UK’s top 10 cheapest places for pie:

At just £11.24 for a steak and ale pie, Blackpool came out on top as the cheapest place in the UK to fulfil your pie cravings, the only area in the study where the average pie costs less than £12.

Wolverhampton landed in second place in the study, costing an average of just £12.06 for a steak and ale pie. Prices still vary across the region, ranging from £8.99 at the cheapest to £16.99 at the most expensive.

Surprisingly, on the other end of the scale, London did not come out as the most expensive place for pie in the UK, as Nottingham turned out to be more costly than the capital. With the average pie in Nottingham sitting at £18.81, this is over £7 more expensive than in the cheapest location, Blackpool. The most expensive pie in Nottingham is The Red Lion, where customers can be set back a massive £24.00 for a standard steak and ale pie.

London follows on as the second most expensive place for pie, with a pie costing an eye-watering average of £18.21. Huddersfield is next, at £17.35, so if you’re looking for a pie in these areas, it’s best to shop around to try and find the best value for money. Kingswood (and Fishponds) and Milton Keynes finish off the top 5, with the average steak and ale pie costing £16.90 and £16.84 respectively.

Mark Fletcher, Head of Brand at Buzz Bingo, noted:

“When it comes to comforting dishes you can enjoy outside your home, a true British comfort food has to be a steak and ale pie. Yet, while this might be a firm favourite to enjoy in the winter months, it is time to celebrate with National Pie Week this March. To get the best value for money, though, it’s worth noting that there are big price differences across different regions (and even postcodes). There is no clear North-South split when it comes to costs, with Blackpool, Wolverhampton and Slough offering plenty of affordable options, while customers in areas such as Nottingham, London and Huddersfield are facing a higher cost to tuck into this classic. For pub-goers, checking local prices can make a real difference.”
