Black History Month: Standing Firm in Pride & Power

Each October, people come together to recognise the stories, cultures, and legacies that have shaped society, while also acknowledging the ongoing journey towards racial equality, justice, and inclusion.

This year’s theme, ‘Standing Firm in Pride & Power’, invites people to celebrate the strength, resilience, and brilliance of Black individuals and communities, past, present, and future.

A range of events, activities, and learning opportunities will be taking place across Wolverhampton throughout the month, kicking off with the Black History Month exhibition at Wolverhampton City Archives.

Open now, the exhibition celebrates the achievements, resilience, and cultural heritage of Black individuals and communities in Wolverhampton. Visitors will encounter inspiring stories, highlighting pioneers such as Olympic champions, civic leaders, and music icons.

Meanwhile, Central Children’s Library will host an ‘African Tales’ story and craft session for families, bringing Black History Month to life through interactive storytelling, on Saturday (4 October), as well as a display of adult and children’s books celebrating Black history at Central Library throughout the month.

Black History Month will culminate with the official launch of the Black History & Heritage trail and website at the Friday Lates event at Wolverhampton Art Gallery on Friday 31 October.

From untold histories and inspiring profiles to cultural events and community creativity, the trail and website will showcase stories of power and pride, standing as a living archive for generations to come.
