New market and food hall opens in West Bromwich – and the return of a much-loved high street name…

The new West Bromwich indoor market opened for business on Wednesday 27^th August.

The new indoor market is located on the High Street and replaces the existing indoor market situated in Kings Square.

This is one of the centrepieces of Sandwell Council’s West Bromwich Masterplan, created to deliver a modern and vibrant destination for both traders and shoppers. Combining traditional market stalls with contemporary facilities, the market will also feature specialist street food in the new food court.

The project is a great example of collaboration thanks to £2.61million funding from the Government’s Towns Fund programme, which is supporting regeneration and investment in towns across the country, and £2.03million funding from Sandwell Council. It is also another project which has been delivered on budget.

As part of the recently launched Sandwell Story – a project created to celebrate the borough, champion its people, and highlight Sandwell as a great place to live, learn, work and visit – the market provides a powerful connection between past and present, honouring local heritage while shaping a bold new future for the town.

Firkins bakery returns to West Bromwich
After a decade away from the high street, Firkins Bakery will return to where it all began – West Bromwich.

Founded in 1870 by Mary Firkin in Carters Green, West Bromwich, the bakery first made its name with award-winning pork pies before growing into one of the largest regional family bakeries in the country.

Though the Firkins family stepped away from the business in 2006, the name and reputation have lived on. Now, spurred on by loyal customers who never stopped asking when the much-loved cakes, breads and pastries would make a comeback, Firkins is returning home to a new base inside the new Indoor Market. The reopening in West Bromwich marks a new chapter for the bakery, reconnecting with its roots while continuing to offer the quality and tradition that generations of families have cherished.

The market will also include butcher, fishmonger, Caribbean food supplies, beauty services, cosmetics and perfume, curtains, mobile phone repairs, as well as clothes, haberdashery and pet food supplies.

A new food court will offer diverse cuisines including East Asian, Sri Lankan, Caribbean, hot pork sandwiches, instore bakery and freshly made doughnuts.
