From Diagnosis to Daily Life: Our New Appeal Champions Living Well

We have launched our new fundraising appeal to support people with a life limiting condition to live well.

The Living Well at Compton Appeal is raising awareness of the support we provide to people from day one of their palliative diagnosis, helping them to live actively and independently with their condition.

Much of this help is provided by our Living Well Service, which is funded by donations and offers a range of support, from breathlessness clinics to social activities and complementary therapies.

Clare Mills, Diversional Therapist at Compton Care, said:

What many people don’t realise is that Compton can support people from the very beginning, providing holistic support to people with a range of long-term health conditions, including Motor Neurone Disease and Parkinson’s, as well as cancer and heart disease.

Our Living Well Centre offers a range of support and activities to help people truly live well with their condition from complementary therapies to ease pain and anxiety, to creating a community where people in similar circumstances can share experiences and find comfort and connection.

Last year, we supported more than 2,000 patients and carers through our Living Well Service. People like Graham Mclauchlan, from Bilston, who, after being diagnosed with Parkinson’s, was in shock and unsure about the future. Thanks to the support on offer from Compton Care, he found hope, companionship and purpose.

Graham shared: “Joining Compton’s Living Well gave me a reason to get up in the morning. Meeting others who understand what I’m going through was like finding my tribe. The support I received from Compton Care didn’t just help me manage Parkinson’s, it helped me reclaim my life and my confidence.”

Rachel Overfield, Chief Executive at Compton Care, concluded: “The support we provide to Graham and others in similar situations is only possible thanks to the generous support of the local community.

“Compton Care has recently received government funding, which will support with some improvements to our facilities, grounds, and digital infrastructure. However, the funding cannot be used to directly deliver our services, including those provided by our Living Well Centre, which helps people navigate life following a palliative diagnosis.

“From social groups to complementary therapies, these are fully funded by our supporters so any donation, big or small, to our Living Well at Compton Appeal will have a direct impact on the care we can provide.”

As well as appealing for donations, we are also highlighting the importance of regular monthly donations, which can help the charity plan ahead and ensure services are available for people in the future.

For example, £5 a month could contribute towards providing complementary therapy treatments to promote health and a sense of wellbeing for patients and their loved ones during challenging times.
